Maybe it's not the best idea but you can use chrome.tabs.sendMessage and chrome.runtime.onMessage.addListener to communicate between contentscript.js ... , From a background script you can listen to the chrome.tabs.onUpdated event and check the property changeInfo.status on the callback.
